What is Skylight?

Skylight is a global software solution that analyzes huge amounts of data in near real time to illuminate vessel activity in oceans across the world. Skylight was born from the vision of Paul Allen, philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft, to support ocean health by using advanced technology to address illegal fishing.

A key aspect of Skylight analytics is a focus on identifying vessel behavior and the location of vessels. The intent is to complement existing tools focused on vessel positions with support to analyst to also understand the activities of vessels in their area of responsibility.

In the image below, you can various types of vessel behaviors (fishing, transhipment) as well as vessel detections from different satellite sources.

As a program at the Allen Institute for AI, Skylight makes its AI models and data available to access in various forms, all at no cost. This include a Skylight web platform, as well as various integrations in other Maritime Domain Awareness and Monitoring, Control and Surveillance platforms.
